Even before the widespread devastating fires in Australia could be fully extinguished, the world was affected by the pandemic of the novel coronavirus, i.e., COVID-19. Viruses like this, which have not been completely controlled yet and are now widely spreading in various countries, are facing challenges.

Along with this challenge, there was a prolonged drought in various European countries. As soon as the drought ended, there was significant loss of life and property due to excessive rainfall. Why have such challenges arisen? To find the answer to this question, we must understand the health condition of the big house we live in—Earth.

The number of planets, satellites, and stars made of rock and soil, like Earth, is so vast that even scientists have not been able to count them. But life exists only on Earth, not on other planets. Why is there life on Earth? Why is there no life on other planets? Because the environment necessary for life exists on Earth, not on other planets.

The environment required for life consists of a balanced atmosphere, heat, light, gravity, and so on. If the balance of the atmosphere is disturbed, the balance of heat is disturbed, and the balance of light and gravity is disrupted, then life on Earth becomes impossible.

In fact, Earth is like a living body. Earth is the shelter and protector of countless creatures. Just as a sick animal cannot care for its offspring, if Earth becomes sick, it cannot provide shelter and care for animals. If the environment is good, Earth’s health will also be good; if the environment deteriorates, Earth’s health will also decline.

When a disease attacks an organism’s body, the temperature rises as a symptom, which we call fever. The same rule applies to Earth. As the atmosphere degrades, Earth also shows signs of rising temperatures. In recent years, Earth has exhibited such symptoms.

According to scientific studies, the average temperature of the atmosphere around 1850, before the start of the industrial revolution, was 14°C. It has now reached 15.1°C. In other words, the average temperature of the entire atmosphere has increased by 1.1°C. At first glance, 1.1°C may not seem significant, but it represents a major change. After all, the human body’s temperature is 37°C, but when it rises by just 1°C to 38°C, it feels quite uncomfortable.

When the body’s temperature rises by just one degree Celsius, it can lead to the breakdown of an entire life. The same applies to Earth. Due to the increase in thermal energy in the atmosphere, the average temperature has increased by 1.1°C. If Earth’s temperature rises by just 1°C, how much will sea levels rise? How much will the snow line elevation increase? How much will oxygen levels decrease? How much will harmful gases increase? The answers to these and other questions are quite interesting.

Greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, such as carbon dioxide, methane, and steam, allow sunlight and heat (energy) to penetrate the Earth but block some of the radiation that would otherwise return to space. Through various processes, this energy moves from one place to another, changing from one form to another. In this process, the necessary elements for life in water, land, and the atmosphere are made available. Heat is stored in the land, air, and water, providing the warmth necessary for life, thus creating a livable environment. Countless streams of life are sustained on Earth through these elements and energies.

This system has been functioning in balance for millions of years. However, in recent times, due to human activity, this balanced system is becoming disrupted. Earth is facing a crisis due to rising temperatures. Due to the added greenhouse gases, the heat coming from the sun to Earth cannot escape in a balanced manner. That extra heat energy is circulating through water, land, and air.

No matter how much seasonal problems increase, it can be said that they are all part of this energy play. According to one statistic, 24% of deaths from heart disease and 25% of deaths from heart attacks are caused by air pollution, and 13 people die every minute due to pollution.

How is the balance of the environment disturbed?

There are many reasons for environmental imbalance. The environment is being polluted for various reasons depending on different countries, times, and conditions. However, there are many common causes of environmental pollution. Excessive population growth, lack of environmental education, lack of public awareness, unorganized industrialization and increasing urbanization, destruction of forests, excessive use of pesticides and medicines, unscientific agricultural systems, competition for nuclear weapons, etc. are some of the causes.

Other causes of environmental pollution include improper waste disposal or management, increased use of plastics and burning of plastic products, use of old vehicles, destruction of forests, lack of environmental education, and lack of public awareness. The use of fossil fuels like coal, diesel, and petrol increases the temperature of the Earth.

Forests are crucial for maintaining temperature balance. Deforestation, over-exploitation of farming methods, and unorganized settlement expansion increase greenhouse gas emissions. These gases have the capacity to absorb and store heat. They absorb unnecessary heat from the Earth. The accumulation of stored heat energy has caused an increase in the temperature of the Earth’s atmosphere, water, and land, leading to climate change due to global warming.

The problems arising from environmental pollution mainly include the destruction of the ozone layer, increase in global temperature, enhancement of the greenhouse effect, floods, landslides, lack of rainfall, excessive rainfall, droughts, erosion, acid rain, decline in biological diversity, decline in agricultural production, and human health issues. These problems result from environmental pollution. Air pollution, water pollution, land pollution, noise pollution, and chemical pollution are also included among its problems and causes.

Scientists estimate that if greenhouse gas emissions continue at the current rate, the average temperature of the Earth by the year 2100 could increase by two degrees compared to the year 1850. As the average temperature increases by one degree, we have already started experiencing increased droughts, major storms, and heavy rainfall in this decade. If the temperature rises above two degrees, the climate everywhere will be more unstable than today. After overall climate change, its effects will be felt on snow systems, water sources, rivers, lakes, forests, vegetation, and all living creatures on Earth.

The causes of environmental pollution are not the same in all countries or in all places. In some areas, they are more prevalent, while in others, they are less so. However, the use of plastics and plastic products is so widespread that perhaps no one is untouched by its effects. How does air pollution occur during the production of plastics and plastic products? After the production of plastics and plastic products, to what extent does the environment get polluted? The answer to that question is quite interesting.

After refining petroleum products, diesel and petrol are extracted, and the remaining materials are processed to give them the required shape and type for making plastic products. Polythene is manufactured by determining how much weight it can bear, what color it gives, and how many times it can be reused.

Various forms of plastic are used in human life, including common electrical materials, various types of toys, utensils, umbrellas, shoes, slippers, and clothing. Since it is resistant to water and bacteria, is easy and lightweight, plastic is used for various purposes, including the packaging of medicinal products.

Plastic has become a major factor affecting human health from water, land, and animals due to improper use and management. In 2018, some cows died in Andhra Pradesh, India. During treatment, 80 kg of plastic was removed from the stomach of one cow, but it did not survive. In Nepal as well, environmentalists say that there is an increased risk of animals consuming plastic in urban areas. When plastic is burned, harmful gases such as carbon monoxide, dioxins, furans, and benzene are released, which directly affect human health.

The impact of burning plastic is not limited to one village or place; it has a global effect beyond national borders. In most villages in Nepal, plastic or polythene is used to ignite fires quickly. Such activities directly affect the respiratory health of housewives, pregnant women, and people working in kitchens.

Scientists have identified plastic as one of the factors contributing to climate change, which is growing as a global crisis. Since the half-life of plastic is about 500 to 1,000 years, experts say that plastic that is discarded randomly will accumulate for generations and negatively impact the environment.

Plastic is made from various chemical combinations to prevent degradation in the environment when exposed to light, moisture, temperature, or microorganisms. Plastic materials can move under different conditions without any chemical processing. Even minor changes in temperature or light can cause toxic elements to evaporate and mix into the air. People breathe this polluted air. Additionally, these particles can be absorbed through human skin.

Plastic has entered our bodies without us realizing it. For instance, breathing in air contaminated by burning plastic waste, opening a new plastic item with a strong smell, drinking hot coffee from a Styrofoam cup, reusing a water bottle, microwaving food in a plastic container, or consuming food that has been frozen or stored for a short time in a plastic container easily transfers plastic into the human body.

Furthermore, waste and plastic are being indiscriminately thrown into rivers, and these materials gradually end up in the sea. Wind and water will break down the accumulated plastic into small pieces. Therefore, in the coming centuries, those plastics will convert into microplastics, i.e., microscopic particles that cannot be seen with the naked eye, and will enter the human body, adversely affecting health.

The Use of Plastic in Nepal

Kathmandu is one of the most polluted cities in the world. According to the global air quality index, the main reason for the pollution in Kathmandu is the open burning of organic materials. Researchers say that humans have produced 9.1 billion tons of plastic worldwide, and plastic ultimately harms both animals and the environment.

According to statistics from the International Centre for Mountain Development (ICMOD) in 2018, around 4.7 to 4.8 million plastic bags are used daily in Kathmandu, with 16% of urban waste consisting of plastic. More than 1 million plastic bags are discarded daily in the Kathmandu Valley. According to 2021 data, a Nepali discards 357 grams of waste daily, of which 20% is plastic.

The World Health Organization (WHO) states that air pollution leads to immediate and long-term health problems, increasing the risk of respiratory infections, heart disease, and lung cancer. According to WHO, 24% of deaths from heart attacks and 25% of deaths from heart disease are caused by air pollution, with 13 people dying from pollution every minute.

Article 15 of the Environmental Protection Act 2076 allows for the establishment of necessary standards to mitigate or eliminate the impact of any activities related to vehicles, machinery, equipment, industrial establishments, hotels, restaurants, or other locations or items that cause pollution or emissions of hazardous substances.

The government had banned the production, storage, sale, distribution, and use of plastic bags thinner than 40 microns with dimensions of 20 inches wide and 35 inches long from May 1, 2072, due to the devastating earthquake. Similarly, to mitigate the risks to the environment and human health, the government announced a policy to impose a complete ban on the production, import, sale, distribution, and use of plastic bags thinner than 40 microns in the public revenue and expenditure details for the fiscal year 2078-79. However, this government announcement has not been effectively implemented.

On August 28, 2078, the Supreme Court issued an order to the government to effectively implement the ban declared by the Nepalese government and prohibit the production, import, sale, distribution, and use of plastic bags across the country. To implement this order, the government has approved the Plastic Bag Prevention Action Plan 2078.

There is a focus on enforcing a complete ban on the production of plastic bags thinner than the specified standards across Nepal, conducting regular monitoring of industries, passing regulations to grant subsidies for bag production, and implementing action plans at provincial and local levels for bags thicker than 40 microns, as well as alternative bag production and use.

The Nepalese government does not have data on how many industries produce plastic. During a survey conducted a year ago in the Balaju industrial area, it was found that plastic thinner than 20 microns was being produced.

Plastic cannot be completely destroyed. Burning it causes significant air pollution, which is extremely harmful to human health and the overall environment. Therefore, there is no alternative to the proper use and management of plastic. But how? Citizens must understand and be aware of what plastic is and what is harmful about it.

Household plastic items should be separated as waste. Plastic and environmental subjects can be prioritized in education from school levels for such awareness. Instead of burning or discarding plastic, it can be reused in various ways. Recycling it automatically reduces production and supply, allowing us to avoid the dangers of plastic.

Krishna Prasad Sapkota The world is now standing at a stage where many forms of existence are at risk of extinction.
