05 Jume 2026\/ <\/strong>Recognizing the need for global political and social awareness for environmental protection, the United Nations observes June 5 every year as World Environment Day across the world.<\/p>\n

The main objective of this day is to raise public awareness about environmental conservation and the challenges posed by climate change. Its long-term goal is to build a safer future by protecting nature and minimizing the impacts of climate change.<\/p>\n

The United Nations General Assembly organized the World Conference on the Human Environment in Stockholm, Sweden, from June 5 to 16, 1972. Following the decision of that conference, World Environment Day was celebrated for the first time on June 5, 1973.<\/p>\n

With a history spanning more than five decades, World Environment Day has become the world\u2019s largest environmental platform, with participation from over 150 countries.<\/p>\n

What began five decades ago as a campaign to increase public awareness has now become a major means of combating serious crises such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and growing pollution. At the same time, we are witnessing the reality that these problems have reached alarming levels in various forms despite these efforts.<\/p>\n

Looking back over the past five decades, the themes and priorities of World Environment Day have evolved with the changing needs of the times. During the 1970s, the world focused on the fundamental relationship between human settlements and the environment under the slogan \u201cOnly One Earth.\u201d<\/p>\n

From 1980 to 2000, policy issues such as ozone layer depletion, sustainable development, and the construction of green cities were given priority. Likewise, in the 21st century and recent years, the focus has shifted toward urgent challenges such as reducing plastic pollution and restoring ecosystems.<\/p>\n

Plastic pollution and efforts to reduce it are among today\u2019s most important environmental issues. Plastic pollution has emerged as one of the most serious environmental challenges facing human civilization. It is causing severe damage to the Earth\u2019s water, land, and atmosphere.<\/p>\n

Because plastic is a non-biodegradable material, it reduces soil fertility and disrupts the natural process of groundwater recharge. Similarly, plastic that enters rivers and oceans destroys aquatic life and affects marine food chains.<\/p>\n

Even more dangerous is microplastic, an invisible poison that has already entered human life. Formed from the breakdown of larger plastic materials, microplastics enter the human body through drinking water, salt, and even the air we breathe. They have been found in human blood and breast milk, increasing the risk of various serious diseases.<\/p>\n

In addition, climate change, biodiversity loss, and increasing pollution remain major global concerns. The theme for World Environment Day 2026 is \u201cNow for Climate,\u201d inspired by nature. This theme appears to emphasize the protection of biodiversity.<\/p>\n

At a time when rapid population growth and unregulated human activities are creating serious threats to nature, this theme is highly relevant. Its core message is that we must understand nature and draw inspiration from it in order to protect the environment and maintain ecological balance. We have reached a point where learning from nature is essential for achieving a balanced climate and securing a safe future.<\/p>\n

Nature is fundamentally a balanced combination of five elements: earth, water, air, sky, and heat. From a physical perspective, humans, plants, animals, and all living organisms are composed of these same elements. Maintaining the continuity and balance of all life forms is the purpose of nature. This year\u2019s program focuses on climate change and nature conservation.<\/p>\n

All countries around the world observe World Environment Day with great importance. However, each year one nation serves as the host country. This year, the host nation is Azerbaijan. The Republic of Azerbaijan is located at the crossroads of Asia and Europe, and its capital city is Baku.<\/p>\n

The host nation leads the main international events of World Environment Day. In collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), it plays a significant role in promoting environmental awareness and practical conservation activities worldwide. The host country also presents its environmental initiatives to the world and sets an example for others to follow.<\/p>\n

As a continuation of COP29, Azerbaijan has introduced policies promoting green energy, the development of zero-emission zones, and restrictions on single-use plastics. It is also encouraging the global community to participate in campaigns such as \u201cNow for Climate\u201d to address the Earth\u2019s climate crisis.<\/p>\n

Although the United Nations has been working toward implementing a global treaty to end plastic pollution by the end of 2024, Nepalis can assess its impact by looking at their own kitchens and surroundings. The European Union and many developed countries have already completely banned single-use plastic items such as straws, plates, and spoons.<\/p>\n

Industries have introduced concepts such as refusing, reducing, and avoiding the reuse of such materials. However, in Nepal, some people still treat these efforts as a subject of ridicule.<\/p>\n

In countries like Nepal, plastic not only reduces soil fertility and obstructs groundwater recharge but also blocks drainage systems through discarded plastic bags and bottles, causing artificial flooding and waterlogged roads during the monsoon season.<\/p>\n

Although the Government of Nepal has repeatedly announced bans on plastic bags thinner than 40 microns, implementation has remained weak due to inadequate monitoring. Some wards in Pokhara, Ilam, and Kathmandu have attempted to declare plastic-free zones and promote cloth bags. However, local governments have not been sufficiently active in expanding these initiatives.<\/p>\n

Public awareness aimed at uniting Nepali citizens in global efforts to address pollution, biodiversity loss, and climate change is progressing very slowly.<\/p>\n

Campaigns conducted by government and non-government organizations to reduce plastic pollution, promote tree planting, and encourage sustainable use of natural resources have often failed to reach the general public due to corruption and ineffective implementation.<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, there is no alternative but for Nepali citizens to take voluntary action from their respective positions to ensure the right to live in a clean environment and to show respect for nature. This crisis cannot be resolved unless citizens themselves develop a collective commitment to abandoning the use of plastic.<\/p>\n

If plastic pollution is viewed merely as a waste management problem, it cannot be solved; instead, the issue will become even more complex. Control measures must begin at the point of consumption. Strict laws and monitoring systems by the government, along with the production of alternative materials by industries, will remain ineffective if they exist only in theory and are not implemented in practice.<\/p>\n

Therefore, it is essential to embrace the message of World Environment Day and take immediate collective action for environmental protection.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
