New Delhi 04 may 2026 / Vote counting is currently underway for the legislative assembly elections held in four Indian states and one union territory. Early trends from West Bengal indicate that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has taken a significant lead over the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC).

According to Data Net, the TMC is leading in 95 seats, while the BJP is ahead in 193 seats. In the 294-member assembly, a party needs 148 seats to secure a majority. Based on the current trends, the BJP has already crossed the majority mark by a wide margin.

According to BBC Hindi, a defeat for the TMC would be historic. The party has been in power in the state since 2011, with Mamata Banerjee serving as Chief Minister for the past 15 years. If the BJP wins, it will form its first-ever government in West Bengal.

Most exit polls had predicted a close contest between the TMC and the BJP. However, early trends suggest that the BJP is heading toward a decisive victory.

West Bengal has a history of one-sided election results over the past 50 years, with whichever party wins—whether Congress, the Left, or TMC—securing a strong majority. This election has added a new dimension due to political leadership and actions taken by the Election Commission.

Voter turnout reached 92.47 percent across both phases of the election, making it the highest since India’s independence. The previous record was 84.72 percent in 2011, which has now been surpassed. Turnout exceeding 90 percent in both urban and rural areas is considered unprecedented.
