06 October Agency – Russia Reports Power Outages in Border Region After Intense Ukrainian Drone Attack
Following a massive drone assault launched from Ukraine, Russia has reported electricity outages in its border regions. The strike by Kyiv is being described as one of the largest attacks since the war began.
Kyiv has vowed to intensify attacks on Russian territory, particularly targeting oil infrastructure. Ukrainian authorities have described these strikes as a legitimate response to Moscow’s daily artillery and drone attacks on Ukrainian cities, which have repeatedly damaged energy infrastructure—leaving millions of civilians without power or heat during freezing winters.
Officials from Russia’s Ministry of Defense claimed that 251 Ukrainian drones were shot down overnight. This marks the highest number of drones intercepted in a single day since the war began in February 2022.
Thousands of civilians in Russia’s Belgorod border region have been left without electricity. According to Belgorod Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov, partial blackouts have occurred in 24 settlements, affecting approximately 5,400 people.
Meanwhile, a strike also targeted an oil refinery in the southern Krasnodar region, injuring two people, according to local authorities. Ukrainian officials, on the other hand, reported that Russia launched 116 drones into Ukrainian territory. Some of these damaged energy infrastructure in the Chernihiv region, and one woman was reported killed in the Kherson area.
According to Ukrainian authorities, Russia is once again reverting to its old strategy of targeting the national power grid. Similar attacks last winter forced millions to live in cold and darkness.
In recent months, Ukrainian drone strikes on Russian oil refineries have caused fuel shortages and increased gasoline prices in several Russian regions.
Kyiv says its goal is to reduce Russia’s crucial energy revenues, which have become a primary source of funding for Moscow’s war efforts.
