Following the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) historic victory in the recently concluded legislative assembly elections, Suvendu Adhikari has been sworn in as the new Chief Minister of West Bengal, India. On Saturday, the Governor administered the oath of office and secrecy to Adhikari at Brigade Parade Ground.
The ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, several Union ministers, and chief ministers from different states. Along with the Chief Minister, five other ministers also took the oath of office.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah attended the meeting as the central observer. State BJP president Samik Bhattacharya proposed Suvendu Adhikari’s name, which was unanimously supported by all the legislators present. Following this, Amit Shah formally announced Adhikari as the leader of the West Bengal Legislative Party.
Amit Shah stated that after the completion of the election process, various proposals and expressions of support had been received, but since everyone backed the same candidate, Suvendu Adhikari was unanimously chosen as the legislative party leader.
Discussions have also been held regarding the allocation of ministries in the new cabinet, the government’s priorities, and the administrative structure. Amit Shah was appointed as the central observer for West Bengal, while Mohan Charan Majhi was designated as co-observer.
In the 294-member legislative assembly, the BJP won 206 seats, enabling it to form the government in West Bengal for the first time. The ruling Trinamool Congress was reduced to 80 seats.
