Kathmandu, March 9 – According to international news agencies, the ruling Liberal Party of Canada has selected former Governor of the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, Mark Carney, as its new leader. With this, it is confirmed that he will become the next Prime Minister of the country.
Mark Carney was born in Fort Smith, Northwest Territories, Canada. He studied economics at Harvard University. Later, he went to the United Kingdom and obtained a master’s degree and then a Ph.D. in economics from Oxford University in 1995.
The 59-year-old Carney received 86% of the members’ votes. This marks the first time that someone without any political background is set to become the Prime Minister of Canada.
Carney has argued that he is the most suitable person to revive the party and to negotiate trade deals with U.S. President Donald Trump.
Carney stated, “As the first person to serve as governor of two G7 central banks, my experience proves that I am the most capable of dealing with Trump.”
Trump has been threatening to impose additional tariffs on Canada. If that happens, it is expected to impact Canada’s export-dependent economy. Carney was appointed Governor of the Bank of Canada in 2008.
