October 10 – Agencies
On Friday morning, a magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck the coastal region of southern Philippines, according to the country’s seismological agency. Tsunami warnings have been issued in multiple countries, and people in nearby coastal areas have been urged to move to higher ground.
The PHIVOLCS (Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology) agency warned of potential damage and aftershocks from the powerful quake, which occurred in the waters off Manay town in Davao Oriental, Mindanao region.
The agency has estimated that a destructive tsunami with waves higher than one meter could occur.
The magnitude was initially reported as 7.6 but later revised to 7.5, and the depth of the earthquake was measured at 20 kilometers (12 miles).
The U.S. Tsunami Warning System also issued an alert, warning of dangerous waves within 300 kilometers (186 miles) of the epicenter.
Rescue Teams Being Mobilized
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. stated that authorities are assessing the situation on the ground, and search and rescue teams will be deployed once it is deemed safe.
“We are working around the clock to ensure that everyone who needs help receives it,” Marcos said in a statement.
